It's Not Just About Weight!

You look at those pictures and you'd think I failed, right?

November 2012. 165 lbs
May 2012. 170 lbs

You look at those pictures and you'd think I failed, right?

The biggest farce, scam, misconception - or whatever you want to call it - in the wellness world is the "losing weight" concept. "Oh, I need to lose 10 pounds", or "I need to lose some weight", "I need to lose a lot of weight, though" blah blah blah blah blah... It's the most ridiculous way of thinking when it comes to your health. Really? Is that what you really need? Even further, is that what you really want? Probably not. Let me explain.

(By the way, please pardon my ultra sexy and stylish superman pants, I obviously didn't remember I had them on when I got the picture taken.)

If I was taking "weight" only into account when evaluating my physical state, I would have an argument that the 6 months I spent trying to change my life were a failure so I should quit. Why would I work so hard over 6 months just to lose 5 lbs and call it a success, right? Now, I realize that I'm still nothing to brag about, but the point is I have made a great deal of progress that the scale will never be able to measure. I don't consider the last 6 months a failure. No way! Do you want to weigh less or do you want to look good? That's the question that should be asked. What's your goal?

Do you want to weigh less or do you want to look good?

Would you really care how much you weigh if you looked awesome? I didn't think so. Stop worrying about what the scale says! It is such a corrupted way to measure yourself. There are so many factors that go into being healthy that weight alone does not cover. Weight alone does not tell the true story about how you're doing. It's not about being bone skinny either, which is not guaranteed-sexy, let's just get that out of the way right now. My advice: Leave the scale and turn to the mirror. Leave the measuring tape and turn to accountability of your habits.

Accountability will keep you honest, making sure that you're looking good the right way, not through shortcuts and cheats (you know what I mean, steroids, weight loss pills, etc). Call it crazy, but what if you could look good and be healthy?

If you just want to weigh less, here's some ideas for you that work fast: cut all your hair off, dehydrate yourself and don't wear any underwear. I mean, if all you want is to weight less, then it doesn't matter how you do it. If all you want to be is skinny, then get Diabetes. Yeah, that sounds crazy, but I'm just trying to drive home a point. There's a wrong way of looking at this and a right way. Look, I'm gonna give you some pointers but I don't pretend or intend to be a health expert, or a professional trainer. I study about it, I don't guess my way around; but I don't want to mislead anyone even if I know my stuff. This is not my profession. Now that that's out of the way I will share a few things with you.

For Lasting Results...
...do the following and repeat as long as you need to.

Stop looking for short cuts and get to work. If people spent the time they wasted looking for and trying out shortcuts in doing physical exercises, they'd feel better and get more effective results.

Running for me, was the one thing I said I'd never do. However, it is the one thing that has been able to give me the results I want in the fastest way; so I do it and I'm going to keep doing it.

Make peace with the fact that it's a life style, not a vaccine that takes care of you for years to come. Be ready to stick with it.

Make peace with the idea of sweating and eating better - not dieting - eating better; nutrition.

Free up some time and get on student mode, because you'll need to invest in yourself. Learn, experiment (carefully), you only get good at what you put time into, and being healthy is definitely a skill you can be very good at.

Expounding on the above:

Choose your physical exercise and stick with it. Mine was running, and it was the best tool for my goal of looking the way I want to (again, I'm still a work in progress but it's gotten me closer and faster than anything I've ever tried. I am adding some crossfit for my muscles because I don't want to just be skinny. Anyways, whatever you want to do, choose it and do it. Choose something you'll like because you'll be doing it for a long time, but if you choose something you like you'll find yourself happier because you will actually look forward to it every time. From this you'll see all kinds of emotional benefits: less stress, better sleep, etc.

Forget diets (in the sense of strict deprivation). As you exercise, you'll notice that certain foods just don't appeal to you. Some foods just seem like a waste because you worked to hard to throw it away on your next meal, so you'll eat better naturally and intuitively (hopefully). You'll also notice that certain foods don't agree with you and you don't perform well or get sick, so you (on your own) will start to abandon it. Also your eating schedule will regulate to something more healthy. Having said this, I must advice that you still have to learn and research about proper nutrition, not dieting, nutrition; to make sure your body is getting what it needs now that you are demanding more from it.

I hope all this has been helpful. There is a better way to do things. You (we) can really look the way we want to and better without risk if we are willing to put in the work. And it can be a lot faster than everyone thinks. I'm happy and curious to hear your opinion.
